Geography

Aim of Subject

Geography is the study of the world we live in, with a focus on its environments, landscapes and natural disasters that occur. It is a wide-ranging subject that directly effects young people today. We want our students to respect our unique planet and be empowered to take an active role in preserving it for future generations.  Raising achievement through building pupil self-esteem and confidence will ensure their voice is heard.

Numerous elements of physical and human geography are studied over the three years of KS3. All students are encouraged to take part in fieldwork and develop skills outside the classroom to enrich their understanding of the topics being taught in class. Some of the key themes covered at KS3 include looking at our changeable weather patterns, the value of maps, Northern Ireland’s geology, volcanoes & earthquakes and population pressures.

At GCSE level we follow the CCEA syllabus. This course involves students completing three modules of study. The physical module is examined in the summer of year 11 and  the human and fieldwork modules are examined in the summer of year 12.

Module 1: Understanding our Natural World

  • River Environments
  • Coastal Environments
  • Our changing weather and Climate

Module 2: Living in our World

  • Population & Migration
  • Changing Urban Areas
  • Contrasts in World Development

At Post-16 Level the Geography department offers an A Level qualification in Travel & Tourism, which is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in Northern Ireland. A wide range of skills are developed based in this challenging and diverse industry.  The course leads onto either employment or further education.
